Morning Workshop:
Putting the Spotlight on Student Performance
This popular workshop from the 2007 KWLA Fall Conference focuses on the importance of using performance-based assessment in the world language classroom not only as a way to determine what students know and can do but also to motivate students. The case will be made for the importance of instruction and assessment being mirror images of each other not only in content but also in form. You will have the opportunity to examine a number of assessment options that can be used in the world language class, and you will zero in on the great value of performance-based assessment tasks as a promising vehicle that can show students what they are capable of doing with the language they are learning and can keep them enthused and motivated about their progress. Time will be provided for you to learn how to develop a sound performance-based assessment task that is tied to standards.
Afternoon Sessions:
Wii? Wiki? Web? What? - Using Web Technologies in the World Language Classroom
Catch the new waves of student learning! Young people all around the world are using new technologies to link and connect with each other. The challenge for educators is to prepare them for their future when many do not understand what happened in the past (changes in new technologies in recent years) and the now. This hands-on session will provide you with an overview of web-based technologies that engage students in communication in a 21st century setting.
Kentucky Chinese Language Teacher Association Meeting
All Kentucky Chinese teachers (members and non-members) are invited to attend this session designed to share ideas for the classroom, resources and network with other Chinese teachers in the state.
A Library of Practices
This mini-workshop is designed to help teachers improve their practice by making connections between the National Standards for Foreign Language Learning and current research in foreign language education. Become a student yourself as you watch the samples of real classrooms, complete a range of activities designed to stimulate your teaching, and prepare to conduct action research in your own classroom.
Using SMART Boards in the World Language Classroom
Ever wondered how you could use that big white board in your room to engage students in your language class. An experienced teacher will share some of her ideas on implementing this new technology in order to provide students with a more interactive learning experience.
